Within our 37 sprawling acres lives the largest collection of bamboo in North America. Nationally accredited by the American Public Gardens Association in 2013, the Bamboo Garden features over 100 different species and cultivars of bamboo from around the world. 

Our newest fall exhibition, Bamboo: Beautiful Massive Grasses, celebrates this special area of the Garden and the remarkable diversity of the bamboo collection. While this beautiful plant is recognized worldwide, what many people may not know is that bamboo is, in fact, a grass! Each bamboo stem completes its growth in a year, and can grow several feet per day. Some bamboo grow as tall as trees, with the ability to transform spaces into peaceful forests. As you explore our Bamboo Garden, take a deep breath and listen to the gentle whisper of the swaying culms overhead as they dance in the ocean breezes from the west.

Bamboo Sculptures

To highlight the beauty and versatility of bamboo, the exhibition steps beyond the living plants to include large and small scale sculptures situated in strategic locations throughout the Garden. Each unique piece emphasizes the diversity, lightness, and tensile strength of bamboo. These sculptures were designed by local artisans along with Garden staff who have a deep understanding of this material.

Bamboo Garden Features

In addition to more than 100 different species and cultivars of bamboo from around the world, the Bamboo Garden also features a one-of-a-kind bronze fountain alongside our Bamboo Pond, both designed by celebrated local sculpture artist and passionate naturalist, James Hubbell. Member Preview + Special Activities

Members will get a first look at the exhibition and the large-scale bamboo sculptures throughout the Garden, without the usual daytime crowds! 

• Member Preview – Thursday, September 12 (5:00 – 7:00 p.m.): No registration required; show your Membership card at the Welcome Center to gain after-hours access to the Garden and explore the bamboo sculptures.
