Education Volunteers

Working with the Education Department, volunteer duties focus on children and family activities, including gardening in our kid-friendly Incredible Edibles Garden, and assisting with science and art activities as part of SAPLinGS (Science, Art and PLay in Garden Spaces) programming.

SAPLinGS Steward

Functions:
Bring fun, educational activities directly to kids through our SAPLinGS (Science, Art, and PLay in Garden Spaces) program! Make learning and growing possible by setting up the stations (morning shift), connect with children and caregivers by guiding them in crafts and science activities, and assist with breakdown to keep HCG clean and green (afternoon shift).

Knowledge or Training Required:
Previous experience gardening and working with children is desired, but not required.

Competencies:
Interest in connecting with children and their caregivers/families; can work independently with detailed instructions from Education team; ability to multitask; ability to monitor and supervise garden activities, adhering to safety protocols; able to direct (and redirect) children and/or caregivers in a positive manner, when needed.

Incredible Edibles Steward

Functions:
Incredible Edibles Stewards support and facilitate Garden Time, a special, site-specific activity offered during SAPLinGS on Wednesdays. Invite Garden guests to take a closer look at (and even sample!) what we’re growing, share gardening knowledge with young learners, and supervise interactive activities such as watering, weeding, and planting. 

Knowledge or Training Required:
Previous gardening experience is an advantage. Previous experience working with children desired, but not required.

Interest in connecting with children and their caregivers/families; can work independently with detailed instructions from Education team; ability to multitask; ability to monitor and supervise garden activities, adhering to safety protocols; able to direct (and redirect) children and/or caregivers in a positive manner, when needed.

Children's Field Trip Facilitator

Functions:
Safely and enthusiastically assist in facilitating school and youth groups through the Garden. Follow SDBG lesson plans and activity instructions. Check in and work closely with the Education Department.

Knowledge or Training Required:
Training or discussion with Education Department required. General and regular computer use (Email). Previous experience working with children desired, but not required.

Interest in connecting with children and their caregivers/families; can work independently with detailed instructions from Education team; ability to multitask; ability to monitor and supervise garden activities, adhering to safety protocols; able to direct (and redirect) children and/or caregivers in a positive manner, when needed; ability to follow detailed instructions and work independently.
